Event Summary

The New York City Department of Health has confirmed that the Bronx has once again seen a Legionnaires’ disease cluster, with this season’s second related outbreak causing one death and four infections. All infected individuals have developed typical respiratory symptoms including fever, cough, and chest pain.

The Department of Health has launched an epidemiological investigation of the affected buildings, focusing on sampling and testing of cooling towers, hot water systems, shower facilities, and other environments where Legionella bacteria can easily proliferate. Preliminary findings suggest that the cluster may be related to contamination in a water system of a large local building, but the specific source of infection is still under further confirmation.

Legionnaires’ disease is an acute respiratory infection caused by Legionella pneumophila, primarily transmitted through inhalation of contaminated aerosols. Cooling towers, air conditioning systems, and shower facilities in buildings are common breeding grounds. The elderly, smokers, and immunocompromised individuals are high-risk groups for infection. The NYC Department of Health is calling on local residents—especially high-risk groups—to monitor their health, seek timely medical care if they develop respiratory symptoms, and asking building management to strengthen water system cleaning and disinfection.
