Event Summary

A new study has found that exposure to strong light environments during sleep at night may adversely affect the cardiovascular system. The research team analysed long-term sleep monitoring data from a large population and found a statistical association between nighttime bedroom light intensity and several cardiovascular health indicators, with subjects in the high-intensity nighttime light group showing a significantly higher proportion of cardiovascular indicator abnormalities than the control group.

The researchers suggest that ordinary households can reduce nighttime light exposure by optimising bedroom lighting environments, reducing nighttime screen use, and installing thicker blackout curtains, but they also emphasise that the study is observational in nature and the relevant conclusions still need to be verified by larger-scale, longer-term randomised controlled studies in order to provide a more adequate basis for public health guidelines.
