The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to worsen, with at least 80 people now dead. Frequent traditional burial ceremonies are identified as a key factor accelerating the virus’s spread.

Severe Outbreak

CBS News reports that the current Ebola strain is highly lethal, with the death toll climbing. More alarmingly, no effective vaccine is currently available for this particular strain.

Congo’s health ministry warned that traditional funeral practices — including washing and touching the deceased — significantly increase infection risk. Despite authorities calling for an end to these customs, compliance remains difficult in many communities.

Control Challenges

Ebola spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. In areas with weak medical infrastructure, outbreak control faces enormous challenges. International health organizations are evaluating whether to deploy emergency medical teams and isolation facilities.

Congo has experienced multiple Ebola outbreaks previously; the 2018-2020 epidemic killed over 2,200 people. The scale and transmission rate of the current outbreak remain under close monitoring.
