U.S. health officials said Thursday that dozens of passengers exposed to hantavirus on a cruise ship have disembarked following the first confirmed death, prompting heightened concern among public health departments.

Hantavirus is typically transmitted through rodent droppings, and human-to-human transmission is extremely rare. However, the closed environment of the cruise ship has raised expert concerns about potential viral mutation. The CDC has dispatched a team to board and assess the situation.

Health departments are tracking all disembarked passengers, requiring them to undergo health monitoring for the next two weeks. Experts emphasize that while hantavirus does not spread through the air like influenza, vigilance is still needed in enclosed spaces.

The outbreak occurred during the ship’s voyage returning from Mexico to the United States, with the specific source of infection still under investigation. The WHO stated the situation does not constitute a global public health emergency.
