The Puerto Rico government announced on August 9 that the entire island will implement water rationing on a scheduled basis, as reservoir levels have dropped to historic lows following months of severe drought. Under the new regulations, residents will receive water according to a predetermined schedule, with some areas receiving water only 2-3 days per week.
The head of Puerto Rico’s Water Authority described this as “the most severe water resource crisis in recent years” and called on residents to conserve water. The government has launched emergency measures, including deploying mobile water purification equipment and increasing groundwater extraction.
The drought has not only affected residents’ daily lives but also impacted agriculture and tourism. Meteorological departments predict that rainfall will remain below normal levels in the coming weeks, and the water shortage situation may further deteriorate.
