A mass kidnapping has occurred in Borno state, northeastern Nigeria, with more than 50 schoolchildren — including several toddlers — abducted by armed gunmen. No group has yet claimed responsibility.
The Attack
BBC reports the kidnapping took place in Mussa town, Borno state. Armed attackers stormed a local school and forcibly took children who were in class. Residents described gunfire as many parents watched helplessly as their children were taken.
Historical Shadow
The incident echoes the 2014 abduction of 276 schoolgirls in Chibok by Boko Haram. Borno state is Boko Haram’s primary area of operation, and while the Nigerian military has intensified counter-terrorism operations in recent years, armed groups continue to carry out frequent attacks.
Authorities have launched a search-and-rescue operation, but the complex security situation in the region makes recovery efforts extremely difficult.
