Trump Warns Taiwan Against Independence Hours After Xi Summit
President Trump has publicly warned Taiwan against declaring independence, just hours after concluding high-stakes bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The statement came in the early hours of May 16 Beijing time, mere hours after Trump and Xi wrapped up what they described as “very successful” talks, though no concrete agreements were announced. Trump’s remarks on Taiwan immediately drew widespread international attention.
Analysts suggest the warning carries multiple signals. On one hand, it indicates that the U.S. position on Taiwan has not fundamentally shifted despite the warming of U.S.-China relations. On the other, it may be a diplomatic maneuver aimed at demonstrating goodwill toward Beijing while retaining leverage for future negotiations.
Taiwan has not yet responded to the statement. Mainland China has consistently upheld the “One China” principle and firmly opposes any form of “Taiwan independence” separatist activities.
The Xi-Trump meeting is seen as a significant marker of warming U.S.-China relations, with dialogue on trade and technology laying the groundwork for improved bilateral ties. However, Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive core issues that both sides must handle with care.
