Ukraine’s Unmanned Warfare Commander Reveals Battle Strategy
Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, has given a rare interview to the BBC, offering insight into Ukraine’s latest drone warfare strategy and operational results.
One-Third of All Battlefield Targets Destroyed by Drone Unit
Brovdi revealed that his unit now accounts for approximately one-third of all targets destroyed on the Ukrainian battlefield. This figure underscores the central role that unmanned systems have come to play in Ukraine’s military operations and their growing significance in modern warfare.
Three Strategic Targets: Oil, Military Forces, and Morale
In the interview, Brovdi outlined his unit’s three primary strategic objectives: Russia’s oil infrastructure, military forces, and troop morale.
Regarding oil infrastructure, Ukraine’s drone forces have repeatedly struck refineries and petroleum storage facilities deep within Russian territory, aiming to undermine Russia’s war economy and energy export revenues. Brovdi noted that these operations have already inflicted material damage to Russia’s energy supply chain.
On military targets, the drone unit continues to conduct precision strikes against Russian positions, logistics lines, and military equipment. Brovdi said that advances in drone technology have enabled Ukraine to achieve greater battlefield effects at lower cost and with fewer casualties.
On the psychological dimension, Brovdi emphasized that the persistent drone threat not only inflicts physical damage but also has a profound impact on the psychological state of Russian soldiers. “When they know a drone could appear overhead at any moment, that uncertainty itself is a powerful weapon,” he said.
Evolution of Drone Tactics
Brovdi discussed the evolution of Ukraine’s drone tactics during the interview. From initially using commercially modified drones to developing dedicated military unmanned systems, Ukraine’s drone warfare capabilities have improved significantly over the past year.
He highlighted enhanced long-range strike capabilities that enable Ukraine to conduct precision attacks on targets deep within Russian territory.
