📰 Ukrainian Drones Strike Russian Primorsk Port and Shadow Fleet Tankers

Ukraine has launched a major drone attack on critical Russian oil infrastructure, targeting the Baltic Sea’s largest oil export port of Primorsk as well as multiple tankers belonging to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”

Primorsk Port Under Attack

Primorsk is Russia’s most important oil export hub in the Baltic Sea, handling large volumes of crude oil and refined products. According to gCaptain, Ukrainian drones struck port facilities, oil tankers, and military vessels.

CBS News confirmed that the strikes targeted not only port infrastructure but also directly hit shadow fleet tankers — vessels used by Russia to circumvent Western sanctions. These tankers typically employ complex ownership structures and flag changes to evade international restrictions on Russian oil exports.

Deadly Russian Airstrikes on Ukraine

As Ukraine launched its counteroffensive, Russia also conducted airstrikes across multiple Ukrainian cities. BBC reported that Russian strikes have killed at least 10 people in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian drones successfully hit Russian shadow fleet tankers and oil terminal facilities. This signals that Ukraine is expanding its targeting from refineries deep inside Russia to maritime transport infrastructure.

Shadow Fleet at Greater Risk

The shadow fleet is a critical tool for Russia to circumvent Western oil price caps and sanctions. Estimated to comprise hundreds of tankers, the fleet operates through insurance fraud, flag-of-convenience switches, and ship-to-ship transfers to continue transporting Russian oil.

Ukraine’s direct strikes on this fleet mark an escalation in the conflict. Analysts point out that if shadow fleet tankers continue to be targeted, global oil transport insurance costs could rise further, pushing international oil prices higher.

Energy War Escalates

Since the US-Israel coalition launched military strikes on Iran in late February 2026, global energy markets have been in turmoil. Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russian energy infrastructure during this period, while Russian retaliatory airstrikes have caused significant civilian casualties in Ukraine.

This ongoing battle over energy infrastructure is profoundly reshaping global oil supply chains and market prices.
