Hantavirus Hits Cruise Ship, 3 Passengers Evacuated

A cruise ship hit by a hantavirus outbreak is heading to the Canary Islands after three passengers were evacuated. A British citizen displaying symptoms has been transferred to the Netherlands for treatment.

The incident occurred aboard the MV Hondius, which had been docked near Cape Verde. Among those evacuated was a British man who developed hantavirus symptoms and is now in isolation treatment in the Netherlands.

Hantavirus is primarily transmitted through rodents, and human-to-human transmission is extremely rare. This cruise ship outbreak has drawn attention from public health experts, as hantavirus typically does not cause large-scale transmission in enclosed environments.

Medical experts point out that the Andes hantavirus is one of the few known strains capable of person-to-person transmission. Other passengers and crew aboard the ship are currently undergoing health monitoring.

Authorities in the Canary Islands are preparing to receive the vessel and are expected to conduct further epidemiological investigations and passenger screening.
