Mali Defence Minister Killed in Largest Coordinated Attack in Years

Mali’s Defence Minister Sadio Camara was killed on April 26 in an apparent suicide truck bombing targeting his residence near the capital Bamako, as the country faced a wave of coordinated attacks by jihadist militants and separatist groups — described as the largest such assault in years.

State television confirmed Camara’s death hours after the attack, stating he died from wounds sustained while engaging with the attackers. Government spokesman Issa Ousmane Coulibaly read a statement on Sunday evening confirming that “a vehicle laden with explosives and driven by a suicide attacker targeted the minister’s residence.” The statement added that Camara exchanged fire with the militants and “succeeded in neutralising some of them” before succumbing to his injuries.

According to news agencies quoting Camara’s family and French media, the attack — launched by militants affiliated with al-Qaeda in the town of Kati — also killed at least three of Camara’s family members. The explosion caused the collapse of the minister’s residence and destroyed a nearby mosque, where a number of worshippers were also killed.

Fighting was reported on Saturday in multiple locations across Mali: Kati, a major military base outside the capital; the northern cities of Gao and Kidal; and the central cities of Sevare and Mopti. Analysis suggests that the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), which seeks an independent ethnic Tuareg state in the north, was primarily focused on northern cities, while the al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) staged simultaneous attacks across the country.

In the northern city of Kidal, Russian mercenaries hired by Mali’s military — part of the Africa Corps — agreed to withdraw after two days of clashes with separatist fighters. FLA spokesman Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane told the BBC: “An agreement was reached between the Azawad forces and the Russian elements of the Africa Corps with a view to ensuring their secure withdrawal from the fighting.”

Ulf Laessing, head of the Sahel programme at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Mali, told the BBC the incident appeared to be the “largest co-ordinated jihadist attack on Mali for years.” Mali has been plagued for years by insurgencies from groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group, and the FLA.

Head of the military junta, Gen Assimi Goïta, was moved to a safe location after his own home was targeted in the attacks. The wave of coordinated violence exposes significant vulnerabilities in Mali’s security apparatus and further destabilizes an already fragile situation in the Sahel region.

International Response

The UN peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA) withdrew at the end of 2023, leaving the Malian government increasingly reliant on Russia’s Wagner Group for military support against terrorism. However, Wagner’s capabilities have also come under scrutiny.

The French Presidency issued a statement mourning Camara’s death and calling on all parties in Mali to exercise restraint and maintain stability and security.

Analysts suggest that Camara’s death could further intensify domestic power struggles within Mali and complicate the already fragile security situation in the Sahel region.
