Drone strikes hit St Petersburg oil facilities overnight — fires and casualties reported as Russia and Ukraine trade blows on energy infrastructure
According to BBC, The New York Times and CNN, the St Petersburg region of Russia was hit by a major drone attack overnight between October 17 and 18, igniting fires at oil facilities and causing casualties, with huge flames and smoke visible across the city. Ukraine described the strike as one of the largest it has carried out on Russian soil in 2026, aimed squarely at the energy export capacity that fuels Russia’s war effort. Russia retaliated with strikes on Ukrainian power and energy infrastructure, causing additional casualties on both sides. The exchange marks another significant escalation in the energy-infrastructure dimension of the Russia–Ukraine war, and once again raises concerns over European energy security as winter approaches.
