CNN and BBC News reported separately on September 13 that Wisconsin Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany’s small plane made an emergency landing on a lake after an in-flight emergency, and Tiffany himself swam to shore where he was picked up by nearby fishermen and taken for medical evaluation. No serious injuries were reported, and the Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies are jointly investigating the cause of the incident. The event has again drawn public attention to the safety guarantees of small plane operations in remote areas.

Details

According to CNN and BBC News, Congressman Tiffany was traveling in a small plane on the day of the incident. An emergency occurred during flight and the crew decided to perform a water landing on a nearby lake. After the landing, Tiffany quickly exited the cabin and swam to shore, where he was found by nearby fishermen, taken ashore, and then sent to a local medical facility for examination. Follow-up coverage by the Associated Press noted that Tiffany sustained only mild fright and minor abrasions, and his overall condition is good. The status of other persons on board is being further confirmed.

Following the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration has dispatched investigators to the scene to conduct a comprehensive examination of the wreckage, flight recorder data, and the weather conditions at the time. Initial findings have ruled out severe weather as a direct cause, while the specific technical fault and operational factors remain under further analysis. Local law enforcement also imposed temporary restrictions on surrounding waters to facilitate the investigation. The incident has again drawn attention to the safety guarantees, emergency communications, and search-and-response capabilities for small plane operations in remote areas such as northern Wisconsin.
