According to The Quantum Insider, IBM has announced an expanded AI and quantum research partnership with IIT Bombay and IISc, covering joint research projects, talent development and shared compute resources.

The partnership contains three core components. First, joint research projects on AI fundamentals and quantum algorithms, with a focus on large-model training efficiency and quantum machine learning. Second, joint labs and talent-development funds at the two Indian institutes, supporting Indian researchers’ academic-to-industry translation paths. Third, opening of selected quantum and AI compute resources on the IBM cloud to the two institutes to accelerate algorithm validation and prototype development.

The partnership is widely viewed as a key move by IBM to build an AI-and-quantum research ecosystem across Asia and is symbolically significant for India as it seeks to enter the global frontier-tech competitive landscape. India’s government has in recent years been pushing the ‘National Quantum Mission’ and the ‘IndiaAI Mission,’ and cross-border partnerships are seen as an important way to compensate for shortfalls in domestic basic-research resources.
