Google Cloud has officially launched a Gemini agent positioned as a ‘universal agent for work,’ combining model capabilities, tool calls and office software into a single entry point. It competes directly with Microsoft Copilot and Anthropic Claude for Work, with the goal of becoming the first system employees touch when they open their laptops. The race is no longer about model quality alone; it is about who can reliably embed an agent inside spreadsheets, email, documents and project tools.

Reuters and Nikkei Asia reported that Chinese AI startup Manus raised more than $500 million after Meta exited a related project. The financing keeps investor attention on AI-agent products that attempt to complete complex tasks for users. However, inference costs, reliability, data compliance and sustained willingness to pay will determine whether the company can turn attention into a durable business.
