US Africa Command (Africom) confirmed on May 3 that two American service members went missing during the African Lion 2026 joint military exercise in Morocco. The personnel were reported missing on Saturday, May 2, near the Cap Draa Training Area, close to the city of Tan Tan on Morocco’s Atlantic coast.

Search and Rescue Operation

“The incident remains under investigation and the search is ongoing,” Africom said in a statement released on Sunday. “Our focus is on the service members involved and their families.”

A large-scale search and rescue operation involving ground, air, and maritime resources from the United States, Morocco, and other participating countries is underway. The multinational nature of the exercise has enabled a coordinated response drawing on resources from multiple nations.

African Lion Exercise

African Lion is the continent’s largest annual joint military exercise. The 2026 iteration runs from April 27 to May 8 across Morocco, Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia. The exercise focuses on all-domain operations, crisis response, and multinational coordination to enhance regional security and prepare for emergencies.

This year’s exercise involves more than 5,000 personnel from over 40 countries and over 30 US-based industry partners. Training scenarios include counter-terrorism, humanitarian assistance, and combined military operations.
