[Brief] LA County reports first death from opioid more potent than fentanyl
According to the New York Post and multiple local health agencies on Oct. 17, LA County has confirmed its first death linked to a novel synthetic opioid estimated to be far more potent than fentanyl. The reports note that the novel synthetic opioid’s potency is estimated at more than ten times that of fentanyl and has drawn close attention in regional public-health surveillance networks. LA County health authorities are calling for stronger hospital and community drug-testing coverage, expanded naloxone distribution networks, and greater public awareness of the risks of novel substances.
