Pay Interruption Affects Tens of Thousands

The Coast Guard is one of the five branches of the US armed forces, with over 40,000 active-duty personnel and tens of thousands of reservists and civilian employees. The pay interruption caused by the government shutdown will directly affect the livelihoods of these personnel and their families, potentially triggering mass attrition and declining morale.

Unlike other military branches, the Coast Guard does not automatically receive appropriated funding guarantees during a government shutdown. This makes Coast Guard personnel among the most severely affected federal employee groups.
