Strategy Posts $12.54 Billion Q1 Loss as Bitcoin Price Declines

Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) reported a staggering $12.54 billion loss in its first quarter of 2026, driven primarily by declining bitcoin prices. The loss ranks among the largest quarterly losses in corporate history tied to cryptocurrency holdings.
The massive loss stems from accounting rules requiring Strategy to mark its bitcoin holdings to fair value. When bitcoin’s market price falls, the company must recognize unrealized losses directly on its income statement.
As of Q1 2026, Strategy holds over 400,000 BTC with a total cost basis of approximately $25 billion. The decline in bitcoin prices from recent highs resulted in significant unrealized losses reflected in the quarterly report.
Despite the reported losses, Strategy’s management reaffirmed its long-term bitcoin accumulation strategy. The company maintains that bitcoin’s role as “digital gold” will be validated as inflation pressures persist and fiat currencies continue to depreciate.
However, Wall Street analysts have raised concerns about the company’s concentrated exposure to a single, highly volatile asset on its balance sheet.
Following the earnings release, Strategy shares fell approximately 5% in after-hours trading, reflecting investor concerns about its balance sheet risk.
