The Israeli military launched fresh airstrikes on southern Lebanon on May 28, declaring areas south of the Zahrani River as “combat zones.” The strikes followed evacuation orders issued to residents in the targeted areas.

According to BBC, the operation represents an intensification of Israel’s ongoing campaign against targets in Lebanon. The military stated that the region south of the Zahrani River has been formally designated as a combat zone, with operations expected to expand.

Residents of southern Lebanon have grown resigned to the prolonged conflict. Despite repeated international calls for ceasefire, fighting in the region has never truly stopped. Since Israeli forces re-entered southern Lebanon in early March, multiple villages have been destroyed and Israel has occupied approximately ten kilometers of Lebanese territory.

The fresh strikes coincided with escalating US-Iran tensions on the same day, with multiple fronts across the Middle East deteriorating simultaneously — raising international concerns about the risk of a broader regional conflagration.
