ECB’s Lagarde Warns Against Copying US Stablecoin Model for Digital Euro

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warned Friday that Europe should not simply replicate the US stablecoin model when launching the digital euro. She emphasized that Europe needs its own framework tailored to its regulatory environment and economic needs.

Lagarde noted that the US stablecoin approach relies heavily on private-sector issuance, lacking sufficient public oversight and monetary policy transmission mechanisms. Europe’s digital euro should function as a central bank digital currency (CBDC), promoting payment innovation while maintaining financial stability.
